Helambu Trek
A relatively low altitude trek, the Helambu circuit is one of the most convenient and shortest treks close to Kathmandu. It can be completed in only seven days and is well supplied with teahouses for overnight accomodations. In Nepal ,Helambu is recognized as a Trekkers Paradise.
Helambu lies to the north of Kathmandu and offers the experience of Sherpa culture. The Sherpa village of Tarke Ghyang that forms the focus of Helambu is a charming enclave of farmers and yak herders. The trek starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. Helambu provides the perfect introduction to Himalayan trekking for those with limited time. This trek is an easy and enjoyable trip, with an average altitude of 3500m. The trek takes you through Tharepati to Tarke Gyang, where a choice of trails opens up. Our recommended route is along the south ridge through Sermathang, down to the river at Melamchi, the site of a mega project that will bring drinking water to Kathmandu via a series of tunnels. The trek concludes with a drive down to Kathmandu via Panchkhal, after a night's camp at Melamchi Bridge. General itinerary Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met at the airport by our airport representative. Transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. Day 02 : Sightseeing tour. Overnight in Kathmandu. Day 03 : Sundarijal to Chisopani: After a short one hour drive to Sundarijal the trail climbs steeply past Tamang villages and on through rhododendron forest to Chisopani. Excellent views over the whole Himalayan range from Manaslu to Everest. Day 04 : Chisopani to Gulbhanjyang : Trail winds gently through terraced fields, tiny hamlets and stretches of grassy open hillside, where we stay overnight. Day 05 : Gulbhanjyang to Tharepati (3597m).: A steady climb through a prickly leaved oak forest with excellent views of the mountains and the Helambu valley. After a night's rest in Tharepati Rise we early for excellent close up views of Gosainkunda and surrounding high mountains. Day 06 : Tharepati to Melamchi: we will make a short, steep descent through a mixed fir and rhododendron forest rich with bird life. Crashing waterfalls sound from the rocky gullies below as you approach Melamchi. Day 07 : Melamchi to Tarkegyang : The trail descends steeply to the valley floor, where you can have a well earned dip in the crystal clear river before completing the short and mild ascent up the other side of the valley. Tarkegyang boasts an 18th century Gompa with a huge brass prayer wheel. Day 08 : Tarkegyang to Sermathang : Our final day's journey is a flat pleasant walk to Shermathang. This is a lively Sherpa village and the residents will be happy to introduce themselves and tell you that they are different from the Sherpa of Khumbu(Everest region). On a clear day the village provides good views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gosainkunda and Rolwaling. You may even see Mt. Everest in the distance! Day 09 : Melamchi return by vehicle back to Kathmandu where you will return to your hotel. Day 10: Bhaktapur Sightseeing. Overnight at Hotel. Day 11 : Kathmandu free day, evening culture show and Nepali dinner, hotel Day 12 : Final departure, transfer to airport. |
